Why Christ's Character Is the Missing Key to Effective Prayer Ministry
Have you ever prayed for others, done all the right things, followed the prayer model, and yet, see little response? You work to get your words right, to bring everything together, but you still see little or no results. You keep falling back on the prayer model over and over again. You start to lose your joy and praying for others starts to feel more like a program than a relationship.
Does How You Pray Actually Matter?
What if changing how you pray could make a difference in your impact on others? Sometimes we get stuck with the idea that the Spirit does what he wants, when he wants, and that we have no say or influence in the process. We tell ourselves that what happens, happens and there is a sense of randomness and unpredictability. We see no clear connection between how we pray and how God works. We ask ourselves if our prayers even matter? Does what or how I prayer matter? Can my actions actually impact the situation? These questions swirl in our heads, creating conflict in our spirit and heart, sometimes leaving us more frustrated than fulfilled when we participate in prayer ministry.
My Personal Struggle with Randomness in Prayer
For years, I struggled with feeling like everything was just random. Sometimes the Spirit moved, sometimes he didn't. Sometimes a lot happened, sometimes nothing happened. I kept focusing on myself, thinking it was all about me. Sometimes I witnessed amazing things, God doing miracles, and other times I saw nothing. I ended up feeling confused, frustrated, and disempowered. I felt directionless and at a loss for clarity, trying hard but with little to show for the effort.
The Realization That Changed Everything
Several years ago, after a season of seeking God, reading his Word, and pursuing Him more deeply, I realized that Christ's character aligns with his actions and that includes his healings and deliverances. We often talk about Christ's character in the context of becoming like Christ and renewing our minds, but those conversations end up separated from prayer ministry and praying for others. What we actually see is that the way Christ lived in the world aligns with how he treated, healed, and delivered people. He didn't separate who he was from what he did.
When I grasped that, I realized that how I behave around people, especially those I pray for, impacts the outcomes. Gentleness, compassion, and kindness in me can open people up to what the Spirit wants to do in their lives.
How to Make Christlike Character Actionable in Prayer Ministry
So how do we make this realization actionable? How do we turn it into something practical we can apply? When we cultivate awareness of others, what we can refer to as "social awareness," and commit to treating people with kindness, gentleness, and honor, we create a plan for how we show up when we pray for someone. Living out that plan and becoming that kind of person helps others open up to what God wants to do in their lives.
We can learn to remove social and cultural barriers. We can behave in ways that cultivate an atmosphere where the Spirit moves freely. Put simply: when we remove those barriers, we get ourselves out of the way, clearing the easiest possible path for the person we're praying for to encounter Christ.
The Benefits of Integrating Character and Prayer
This approach produces positive benefits. It normalizes prayer ministry so that instead of not knowing where to focus or what to change, we gain insight and clarity about what actually produces transformation. We build sensitivity and awareness toward others so that when we pray for people, we truly see them, and our hearts turn towards understanding them. We open ourselves to others so we can integrate the character of Christ into our ministry.
Integrating character and ministry also builds protections in ministry. When we genuinely care for others, our words and actions touch and impact people in positive ways. Without this intentionality, our prayer ministry can become erratic or stale. We may end up with varied results and never understand why. Our may discover that our care for others loses focus so that we lose track of how and whether we're actually touching people's lives.
The Danger of Elevating Gifting Over Character
One of the greatest losses that comes from neglecting to integrate Christ’s character with our gifting is the elevation of gifting over character, rather than integrating the two. This hurts us personally, as well as the body of Christ and those within our ministry. We need to see gifting and character work together. That integration is where the richness and fullness of Christ produce real change in our lives.
Becoming the Kind of Person the Holy Spirit Can Work Through
We need to become self-aware people, not only for our own sake, but for the benefit of others. We want our self-awareness to bring others peace, to make us a calming presence that allows space so we can others discover what God wants to do in their lives. We want to become people who know how to partner with the Holy Spirit, not working at cross purposes or misunderstanding Him. We can grow in confidence, assurance, and clarity about how the Spirit works, what He's doing, and how we can join Him. That awareness shapes us into people who serve God well and serve others well.
