Why We Need a Prayer Ministry Model

Have you ever wondered if there is a way to pray for others that will go deeper? Most of us want to pray for people in ways that are meaningful and impactful.

We may be ready to move beyond a quick, polite "Lord bless them" at the end of a conversation, though there's nothing wrong with that type of prayer. We want to pray in ways that meet people where they are, addresses what they're struggling with, and leaves them sensing that they experienced God in that moment. We want to show up for our friends, coworkers, and neighbors who are hurting and offer them something genuine.

Where to Start

At the end of this blog, there are short summaries and links to the series published earlier this year. The series discusses the full Five Step Prayer Model series yet and each summary below provides a snapshot of each blog with a link to the full content. You may find it helpful to read the whole series as you find time. The final blog can be really helpful because it walks through an example of the prayer model in action and ties together the principles discussed in the series.

We have people who are in our world and God wants to use us in their lives. They have struggles, worries, sickness, and relational problems; they are people just like us in many ways. The five-step prayer model is one way to be better equipped to pray well and be better equipped for God to use us to touch people's lives.

The Moment It Gets Hard

Here's what we often run into: someone opens up to us, maybe shares something serious or complicated, and layered with history we don't fully understand. They've trusted us enough to ask for prayer or to say yes when we offer it. It is easy to get slightly confused and find that we are not quite sure where to start.

The complexity plus the seriousness of their needs can make the situation hard to read. We can find that we get stuck inside our thoughts, asking ourselves questions that surface like, Do I have what it takes to do this well? What if I miss what they really need?

This isn't a faith problem or a question about our spiritual maturity. It's the reality that when we lack a clear, practical path for praying with people, we can end up a mixed-up about what is the best way forward for the person receiving prayer and for us as the person praying.

There Is a Better Way

Let’s pause for a one minute and clarify what we mean by the term, prayer ministry. What we mean when we talk about prayer ministry is to pray with someone who is present with you, who has shared a need and invited you into that moment.

This type of prayer does not need to be improvised. We can have a model that anchors our practice and provides intentionality in the way that we pray. This type of prayer often happens in church, at an altar, or in a prayer room but just as easily can happen where we work, study, or in the neighborhood where we live. The prayer model is not limited by the context and in fact, we gain freedom to pray for others in a wider variety of circumstances when we have a clear model.

What is helpful to understand about prayer ministry is that proximity is matters. And Scripture shows us that God cares deeply about what we do with the people who are right in front of us. This is what the Five Step Prayer Model was designed for; to give us a clear, Spirit-led framework to pray with people wherever we are.

What the Model Does for You

Think of the model less as a script and more as a path. It anchors you in complex situations so that when someone's story is hard to understand or when you're not sure where to begin, the model gives you a steady way forward. You have a path to walk that is familiar to you and you don’t have to grasp for what to say or how to act.

Here's one thing that makes it more than a rote system: the structure creates space for the Holy Spirit to work. Far from being restrictive, the model opens things up. This is a principle we see often in Scripture, that God works within structure. Healthy relationships, healthy churches, healthy ministry all operate within frameworks that are understood, some implied and some explicit. The model doesn't get in the way of the Holy Spirit; it makes room for Him.

It also does something else that is helpful for the church; it opens the door wider so that more people can be invited to participate in prayer ministry. When there's a model to follow, anyone who has the heart and desire to pray for others can step in. Scripture tells us to "pray for one another," and the model helps believers understand how to do that well; with specificity, with care, and with an understanding of meaningful ways that can help impact the lives of others.

When we begin to regularly use this model, we find that we begin to grow in prayer ministry. The model creates a learning loop. We notice what went well, where we could have listened more carefully, and how we could help someone feel safer or more at ease. We become more attentive, effective, and equipped follow the Lord’s invitation to pray for others.

Go Deeper

If you haven't read through the full Five Step Prayer Model series yet, I want to encourage you to do that. The summaries below will give you a snapshot of each blog, but read the whole series when you can. Especially look at the final blog because it walks through a full example of the model in action and brings everything together for you.

God has placed people right in your immediate world; people who are weight down with concerns, need prayer, and who God has placed in your world for a reason. We want to be available to be used by God to touch those people's lives and the five-step prayer model is one way to be equipped to do that well.

That is His invitation; that we can be used by Him in more effective and impactful ways than we ever yet imagined.
