Reasons for a Prayer Model

There are at least four sound reasons to have an established prayer model for prayer ministry. These four reasons form a healthy framework and foundation for practicing prayer ministry that reflects well on the community. It is helpful to think that even when we pray for someone outside the church walls, we need to reflect on the reality that we represent others besides ourselves who are part of the broader community. This is one healthy way that practices rooted in sound principles with broad application regardless of the doctrinal beliefs can reflect well on the church.

Prayer ministry principles can be adapted within denominational beliefs and practices. Here we will briefly mention four principles that frame the prayer model and over the next several weeks, each of these principles will be expanded on.

A model invites everyone to participate in prayer ministry. This is important because it provides the opportunity for people to deepen their spirituality both personally and in community. It helps them to connect with others. This is a sound way for the laity of the church to activate their beliefs and build relationship with each other.

A model creates expectations for prayer ministry. There are expectations at every level of ministry in the church and prayer ministry should not be an exception. The expectations are established in both directions, for those giving prayer and for those receiving prayer. Clear expectations that are known by both parties is one sign of healthy ministry.

A model establishes a framework for accountability in prayer ministry. There are guardrails that keep people from self-defining their role or responsibility and place accountability within a framework established and accepted by the community. These principles and guidelines supply healthy boundaries for everyone by creating an environment where prayer ministry can flourish.

A model creates a way to measure progress in prayer ministry. We would love to see our prayers answered immediately and completely in the way that normally occurred in the ministry of Jesus. Our reality is that we do not understand, practice, or integrate all that Jesus was and did while he was incarnate. We follow him to the best of our ability but we also make space for the imperfection that comes from us, others, and a broken world when we use a prayer model to minister to others. A model that includes a method to check-in and verify what is happening is healthy for all of those who are part of a prayer ministry.

These reasons help to understand why following a prayer model is important for prayer ministry and allows space to be adapted within a variety of church structures. A healthy path is part of the interpersonal aspect that builds relationship within prayer ministry. Keeping these principles in mind encourages those who practice prayer ministry to grow personally and multiply the ministry corporately.
