Creating Space for the Holy Spirit Means Exchange
Have you ever asked yourself, “How can I create deeper friendship with the Holy Spirit?” or “How can I better understand God and his plan?” Understanding God, how He works, and what He is doing are questions that emerge in the minds not only of Christians, but most of humanity. Most people have a curiosity and desire to connect with the Divine.
The challenge is that we often get stuck inside of our heads, in the thinking phase, and fail to turn our thoughts into actions. But what if there are concrete steps that can deepen friendship with the Holy Spirit? What if not only does God want us to move towards Him, but He also wants to be friends with us? Here are some suggestions to start building a better friendship with the Holy Spirit.
First, we need to stop one thing in order to start something new. We live full lives, and we should not focus on how to cram one more thing into our schedules. That kind of thinking makes most of us feel even more tired and anxious. Instead, we should think about what we can stop doing so that we can start something else in its place. It is easy for us to have things in our lives that we think relax or serve us in some way but the reality is that it does not make us better in anyway. So how can we identify those activities in our lives that we are better off stopping so that we can start something new?
That is a good question, and it can be answered with another question: What distracts you from starting friendship or deepening friendship with God? Is there something in your life that works against that relationship? Let’s think about a few simple ways to check whether something moves us toward or away from friendship with God. Love is a good place to start because God is love. One clear articulation of love is found in 1 Corinthians 13.
To discern if something moves us towards friendship with God, we should sense that it produces patience, kindness, humility, gentleness, courtesy, and gladness in the truth. These characteristics are simple, clear ways to check if we are moving towards friendship with God through an activity. If something does not produce what indicates friendship with the Holy Spirit, it may be a good time to let that thing go. It is worth considering on the journey to deeper friendship with God.
