Supernatural Ministry Without Weirdness: Creating Safe Atmospheres
“God made me do it” is never a hall pass for awkward antics or poor conduct in prayer ministry. The supernatural should attract seekers, not repel them. Leadership coach Carey Nieuwhof reminds us, “The unchurched are looking for authenticity, not theatrics.” Follow a three-step safety plan.
1. Self-assessment: Ask for feedback from those you respect and honestly receive their input. Were you overbearing, timid, using excessive volume, or something else? Invite trusted friends to critique; humility grows through honest feedback.
2. Emotional intelligence: Notice discomfort cues-leaning back, crossed arms, darting eyes. Adjust posture, lower tone, or pause. If you are in an atmosphere where it is appropriate, provide modesty cloths and position trained catchers; safety is love in action.
3. Clear communication: Explain manifestations briefly-“If you feel warmth, that’s God healing.” Clarity turns curiosity into expectancy. Always deflect praise upward: when someone tries to focus on you, make sure they understand that this is about the ability of the Holy Spirit to heal and change lives.
Genuine supernatural ministry may surprise people, but it should always leave them feeling valued, not violated. When love leads and weirdness bows out, the Spirit’s presence turns from rumor to reality and it’s an atmosphere everyone wants to return to.
